Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, an anti-DHT (dihydrotestosterone) compound. 

With its ability to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, Finasteride offers therapeutic benefits in reducing prostate size and improving urinary symptoms associated withbenign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as well as promoting hair regrowth and preventing further hair loss in individuals with male pattern baldness.

How Finasteride Work

Finasteride is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate gland. By reducing prostate volume and relieving bladder outlet obstruction, Finasteride helps improve urinary flow rate, reduce urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia, and alleviate bothersome urinary symptoms associated with BPH.

Finasteride is also approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. By inhibiting the production of DHT, Finasteride promotes hair regrowth, increases hair density, and slows down the progression of hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia.

Efficacy

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Finasteride effectively reduces prostate volume by approximately 20 to 25% over a period of six to twelve months. This reduction in prostate size leads to improvements in urinary symptoms and flow rates, with symptomatic relief typically observed within three to six months of treatment initiation.

With alopecia, Finasteride has been shown to:

• Significantly increase hair count;
• Improve hair thickness;
• Slow down hair loss progression.

Clinical trials have reported improvements in hair growth in up to 80% of treated individuals, with noticeable results typically observed after three to six months of continuous use.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dosage of Finasteride for BPH is 5 milligrams once daily, taken orally, with or without food. For male pattern hair loss, the recommended dosage is 1 milligram once daily, taken orally. 

While Finasteride is generally well-tolerated, it may be associated with certain adverse effects, particularly related to sexual function. Common side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction. These side effects are usually mild to moderate in severity and reversible upon discontinuation of Finasteride.
