Accutane General Info
Accutane is an anti-acne drug that inhibits the sebaceous gland, diminishes oil production, and stops acne development. Accutane s active ingredient, Isotretinoin, is a retinoic acid derivative. Accutane was introduced as an anti-acne drug in 1982, and since then, it has been sold worldwide, and it is considered the most effective treatment for severe acne.
Clinical Trials
A clinical trial on Accutane was conducted in 2005. More than 133 patients with severe acne were treated with Accutane for 28 weeks. One hundred twenty-seven patients had a partial or complete clearance of acne without an acne relapse. This clinical study shows that Accutane's s success rate of treating acne is over 95%.
Accutane is Sports
Most androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to secrete sebum (oily substance). Sebum is composed of fats and the remnants of dead fat-producing cells. Sebaceous glands are found in all hair-containing areas of the skin. Once the sebaceous glands become hyperactive, the hair follicles begin to clog with sebum, leading to acne.
Unfortunately, acne is probably the most common side effect associated with steroid use.
Supratherapeutic dosages of steroids are often accompanied by acne on the face, back, shoulders and chest.
General Administration
Medical guidelines
0.5mg -1mg/kg of bodyweght (maximum daily dosage of 100mg/day for a 220 lb person)
Teraphy lenght 15-20 weeks
Most common use in sports and bodybuilding
Athletes and bodybuilders usually take lower dosages than standard medical guidelines. The usual dosage range is 10-20 mg/day. Please note that the dosage must be divided into two intakes. The manufacturer is particular about the split intake. Please take Accutane only with meals, where high-fat meals are preferred because they raise Accutane s bioavailability.
Therapy length used by bodybuilders is usually much shorter than the medical use. The usual therapy length is 6-8 weeks.
Most athletes with a genetic predisposition to acne will repeat the therapy 2 or 3 times a year. Please note that a break of at least two months between treatments is highly recommended.
Administration Women
Do not use Accutane if planning pregnancy or pregnant. Real case studies demonstrated that a small dosage of Accutane could lead to severe complications with fetal development. Do not use Accutane during lactation of a baby.
Possible Side Effects
Accutane is a potent drug, and the overdose could lead to serious side effects and complications.
Please note Most side effects were reported at the treatment of severe acne cases, where dosages were 1-2 mg/kg body weight or 80-100 mg of Accutane per day.
Most common side effects reported are: redness and rashes, peeling of the skin, itching, psychosis, headaches, heart palpitations, and visual impairment.
Accutane shows a moderate level of hepatotoxicity and could suppress HDL (good cholesterol) levels.
Please do not exceed the recommended dosage range to avoid the most common side effects.
